How I sang for Lady Gaga at her birthday party in Canberra!

Courtney Act
on 15 Apr 2010

From Courtney:
When I got the call to perform at Lady Gaga’s birthday party I was soooo excited. Gaga is my most favourite person on the planet right now. I admire her talent, dedication and glamour and the way that she has returned such theatrics and excitement to the world. I went to see her concert in Sydney, clad only in some “Caution” tape and not much else, I was ever so excited when I was told that she had see me in the crowd.

The next night at Disgraceland Sydney I performed Telephone with Gaga’s dancers and crew in the audience, again wrapped in the Caution tape, and no, it was not the same Caution tape from the night before. A few days past and I was rehearsing for my show at Disgraceland Melbourne, I got a call asking if I wanted to perform at her birthday party. OH MY GOD. I was so excited to be performing for my queen, such an honour.

The big day arrived and we headed to Canberra, I did a little walk through of the picturesque Botanical Gardens which is where the party was to be held later that night and then back to the hotel to tizz my self up for the celebrations. I entered just after the main course wearing a gold bubble dress singing Sweet Transvestite. She sat watching with a big grin on her face as I danced through the crowd and played up to everyone. When I got to the second verse I danced over to Gaga and gave her a bit of a lap dance, I then jumped up onto the table and brought the song home, dancing on the dinner table top, for the final moment, her singers and dancers behind me filling in the backing vocals on “Sweet Transvestite”. It was pretty bloody gay! After that number I acted as the MC as the cake was brought out and I lead the crowd in an accapella version of Happy Birthday.

Later on it was my job to lead Gaga and her Dad down a little bush track to an out door cinema that had been set up. The path was dark and slippery and rocky. Gaga looked at me and said “Oh dear, this looks dangerous, should I take off my shoes?”. I was most relieved at this because i was concerned for my  self walking in my heels, let along her in her amazing 6″ Armani Privé, Swarovski encrusted, works of art! I didn’t want to be the person responsible for breaking Lady Gaga. So we took our shoes off and held hands as we walked down the path and chatted. We then arrived at the open air cinema where everyone sat down on beanbags and big comfy chairs and we all watch Avatar on the big screen. Quite surreal.

The whole night was so sweet and fun and strangely very normal. A whole bunch of people getting together to celebrate the birthday of their friend., Gaga might be the biggest star in the world right now, but at the end of the day she is still a fellow human being like you or like me. It was really humbling and wonderful to be apart of and a definite career highlight! I got a vibe from Gaga that was so warm and loving and creative. She seemed so genuine and every bit true to herself and her marvelous creation. She watched me perform with a beaming smile on her face, gave me a most genuine warm hug, and chatted so casually with me. She is a true entertainer and most definitely an inspiration to me and so many others around the world. Thank you Gaga for being you and thank you to the greater-good that I got to sing for you at your birthday party! What an honour!

Courtney Goes Gaga

Editor
on 22 Mar 2010

Courtney Act attended the Lady Gaga concert on Thursday evening in an outfit to rival Gaga herself.

The outfit was constructed using strategically placed caution tape, lycra and toupe tape, inspired by the outfit that Lady Gaga wears in her controversial video clip Telephone featuring Beyonce.

The outfit quite literally stopped traffic, and had fans lining up for photos with Courtney at the Entertainment Center.

I am still going goo goo for Gaga – Deconstructing Lady Gaga

I have not seen a better reveal of an artist. Lady Gaga started life in my awareness as a manufactured pop tart, created by a record company. Whispers that she wrote her own songs failed to convince me otherwise. Stories she had written for Britney etc… still need to see it to believe. Second single… amazing, but surly still just a construct. The moment of change came when I saw her playing Poker Face on piano and belting it out in a radio studio. The girl’s got talent. The layers continued to be revealed with performances on American Idol and other shows around the world. Poker Face goes number 1 making Gaga the first artist in over 10 years to hit the top of the Billboard charts with her first two singles! More research shows that she could play the piano by ear at the age of 4 and started performing in NY clubs at the age of 14.

The styling is amazing, creative and different for every performance. You can’t escape the many faces of Gaga that are all so diverse but inexplicably the same person. This is too good to be manufactured, this girl is real. From the NY club scene a kid who proclaims that she would carry a fog machine in her hand bag.

Today I watched this video of Gaga playing Paparazzi live. Another stellar deconstruction. You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

I saw her interviewed on The View, which didn’t thrill me, but I was content with what is an amazingly talented writer and performer. There is a juxtaposition that at first seems confusing. Quiet, reserved and almost Paris Hilton like in an interview. But then I got caught in a blissful youtube loop of Gaga videos and watched this somewhat awkward by the interviewer, somewhat reserved Gaga sitting in powerful silence and making me squirm. Perhaps it is a technique, perhaps it is just her. But you can’t deny, that although she is not traditionally the best interview, there is something that has you on the edge of your seat. She is poised and in control as she sips her ginger tea:

Then comes the revelation that Poker Face is a song about ‘Poker facing your sexuality! At closer examination of the lyrics… one couldn’t say that conclusively, but I suppose you could construct that now knowing that Gaga herself has decreed it.

She can write amazing songs, she can sing, she can play the piano, she can dance, she can play an interviewer and make em’ squirm, she has an opinion and she likes to talk about it, she is the creative director of all that you see of her and she even has amazing hand writing… I think I might have a gay crush. How did this girl with so much spunk make it through the record companies apparent beige artist filter. Finally we have someone with colour and excitement.

Then this special shout out on her website: “And to my gay fans, please know that I’m always thinking about you, and how I can give you and every tour date the absolute best performance of my life.” Just a random special shout out to the gays…

Even Kanye & Kid Cudi have sampled the acoustic version of Poker Face into a cute little diddy playing on the ‘Poke Her Face’ spin, titled “I Poke Her Face”

And I leave you with a line from her ‘Transmission: Gagavision’ weblog: “Lady Gaga has been sent to Earth to infiltrate human culture one sequin at a time” – I am a believer!
